FUNDRAISING
our history
The original school was housed in a building on St. George’s Road, Southernwood, between 4 October 1918 and 2 October 1920. The school in its present building was opened by Mr. James Stewart, M.L.A.
The first School Committee Meeting was held on Tuesday, 21 January 1919 in the school room in St George’s Road. Mr. Bruyns was the first chairman and Mr. Sturgess the first secretary. At this meeting, a principal was appointed, namely Miss Craig, who remained at the school until 31 March 1930.
Miss Tyrrell, the first teacher to assist Miss Craig, was appointed in August 1927 and she was paid £6 per month. The two houses of the school were named after Miss Craig and Miss Tyrrell. Today Craig is known as Red House and Tyrrell as Yellow House.

At the meeting of the first School Committee, Mr. A.W. Barnes reported that the cost of the new school building was estimated at £5,500. Mr. Barnes was elected chairman of the School Committee on 11 May 1921.
At the meeting of the School Committee held on 13 November 1929, Mr. T.H. Bentley was appointed as principal from January 1930. He remained at the school until December 1948. The first school secretary, Mrs. Peggy Reid, was appointed on 5 April 1971. She remained in this position until her retirement at the end of 1983.
At a meeting held on 11 February 1949, Mr. Wegener was welcomed as the new Principal. After 27 years as Principal, Mr. Wegener retired at the end of 1976.
On Friday, 9 August 1963, the education Department advised the school that they had accepted the tender for R 16 663.00 for the building of the swimming pool and levelling of the school grounds. Mr. Vos was appointed as Architect for this project. The Woodwork Class was started in 1940, and in 1951 the school applied for a Special Class.
Mr. F.A. Emslie was appointed as Principal from January 1977 and served until December 1980. He then moved to Port Elizabeth where he became Principal of Victoria Park Grey from January 1981. In January 1987 he moved to Cape Town as Principal of Kirstenhof Primary School.
The school Library was started by Mrs. Battle in January 1977.
Mr. B. Main took over as Principal in April 1981 and stayed until September 1985, when he left to take up an appointment as Deputy Head of the Teachers’ Centre in East London. He relinquished this position at the end of June 1988 when he became principal of the Aqua Vista Primary School in East London. Mr. Bruce Main wrote the words for the school song.
Mr. D. Schenk, took over as Principal in January 1986 and left in September 1991 to take over the principalship of Gonubie Primary School. In 1989, Mr. Schenk, with the help of his dedicated Staff, was responsible for the planning and erection of the School Hall. As money became available, other projects were embarked on to ensure continued progress.
Mr. R. E. Joiner became principal in January 1992. The school enrolment was 215. Mr. Joiner left the school in 2006, whereupon Mr. M. Kockett became Principal. He retired in January 2015.
Mrs. R. Vice served as acting principal from February 2015 to January 2016. The Department of Education named the school a Full Service School in October 2015 and the school also celebrated the purchase of a new school bus. That year the school hall was converted into grade 6 and grade 7 classrooms when some prefab classrooms were deemed obsolete and had to be removed.
Mrs. M. Rothmann took up her appointment as Principal in February 2016. Since then two small classrooms have been built by Amalgamated Precast to replace the prefabs and this year two more prefabs have been built on the bottom field where the cricket nets used to be, by the Department of Education. In 2017 a second school bus was purchased to replace the old VW Kombi.
From 2017 Mrs. Rothmann spearheaded the renovation of the school property by commissioning alterations to make the school property more secure and the admin office more accessible to visitors and parents.
Currently the school is enjoying a facelift by way of a new coat of paint on the exterior walls and roof, new guttering has been installed and a covered waiting area near the school security guard has been erected to keep learners waiting for their transport safe.
The Selborne College Cultural Society has donated R15, 000 to the school for the renovation of our school kitchen.
The school anticipates the arrival of two more pre-fabs to house additional grade two and grade three classes. We also aim to expand the Special Education Needs program in order to cater to learners requiring extra support.
Southernwood Primary can expect great things to happen over the next hundred years.
